Overview
- 1,514 responses; of those, we collected 648 on paper through in-person engagement (international festival, community watch meetings, library, partner organizations)
- Concerted effort to engage individuals with lived experience in poverty—the data suggests we were successful:
- 21 percent of respondents reported annual household incomes of less than $24,000
- 25 percent of respondents reported annual household incomes of between $25,000 and $49,000
- Respondent race:
- African American – 41%
- Caucasian – 37%
- Latino – 7%
- Mixed Race – 5%
- Did not wish to answer – 4%
- Other – 3%
- Asian – 2%
Top barriers to economic mobility as reported by respondents:
- Lack of job training – 43%
- High cost of living – 41%
- Criminal background – 35%
Top supportive factors to help people move up the economic ladder (potential focus areas)
- Job training – 43%
- Affordable housing – 40%
- Higher minimum wage – 39%
Rank ordering of barriers and supportive factors changed depending on demographic characteristics.
Disaggregated data revealed the following:
- Female respondents ranked “higher minimum wage” first among supportive factors while male respondents ranked it fifth
- “Dependable transportation” was ranked higher as a supportive factor by respondents who reported low incomes than respondents who reported moderate or high incomes
- While “Education beyond high school” did not show up among the top three supportive factors overall, respondents identifying as African American and Latino ranked it second
- Respondents at the lowest income level reported the following as the top three barriers to economic mobility
- High cost of living – 53%
- Criminal background – 44%
- Racism – 30%
